Working with Excel sounds like a foreign language to many: VLOOKUP, SUMIF, conditional formatting—what does that even mean? Producer Martin Bien introduces the interface of common spreadsheet programs and shows how to build a semi-automated budget monitoring spreadsheet in just a few steps. Participants will then build their own system using a sample template, simplifying their production work in the independent performing arts. All participants are warmly invited to bring their own questions and problems related to using Excel to the course.
Introduction to the environment of spreadsheet programs using Google Sheets as an example
Basic formatting and automated calculations
Programming basic functions and their nesting
Development of a customizable template for budget monitoring
May 13, 2026, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The course is for producers, producing artists and anyone who wants to become one.
Bring your computer and a specific question about using Excel. The course will be held in German. English contributions (spoken in English) are very welcome.

Martin Bien is a producer in the independent performing arts and part of produktionsbande, a Germany-based network for this sector. He has completed vocational training as an office administrator and studied Applied Theatre Studies in Giessen.
